Ro Hith

Translation of బాలసుధాకర్ మౌళి's poem 'Ajeyulu' Immortals Ocean wanders and barks around the feet of those two kids. They don't mind it. It barks and barks wagging its tail of waves and finally retrieves. Feet as ferryboats they walk through the village on shore. Their eyes are seashells enclosing moonlight, Misplacing them unknowingly And rediscovering them- Somewhere at the entrance of a deluded house Sometime in an imagined street. No doubt that, for them Ocean is either a dog or a dead snake. They are immortals They won over the ocean.

Malayalam had always synthesised many beautiful poems and a great literary culture. I have been seeing some poignant poems written by very young people in Malayalam. Please pay attention. Here are some poems translated by my friend Ra Sh. Map By Uma Rajiv / Translated from Malayalam by Ra Sh I read my nudity Like a map. What I gather by the ear I learn by touch. I run my fingers Along the routes To my destinations By foot, sea, air, Apprehensive about Border disputes. Unpolluted by smoke or dust Of any uprising, It stretches prone Or rolls up. In every map roll There are codes Commonly accepted By the world. I seek the sign That a people/nation Degenerated by signs Cannot exist. On realizing that I have to own it first Before discarding, I locate my home on that map. Every dawn, I leave my home. At dusk, I observe familiar landmarks And establishing that the map follows not The real model of the earth, I try to make it whole In a globe made of darkness. --- Something that can happen to the nation that is `I' ! By Samudra Neelima / Trans from Malayalam by Ra Sh As I get apportioned In different directions – I I I I I I Military I. The Republic Day parade Of Iiiiiiis. As I go on a stroll With Iiiiiiis, I dispatch one I In the other direction. Another I to the beach. Plant an I in the classroom. Assign one to do the graffiti. Send one to the opponent’s house to demolish it. Sometimes, they meet. They exchange their duties Without my knowledge. Thus, some days, I meet at the beach The one I planted In the classroom. The one I sent To write a test Is caught writing poetry. The walls meant for graffiti are demolished. Graffiti encroach the opponent's house. The telecommunication system In the Ministry that is `I' Goes haywire. The regime is overthrown. I am removed from power. Forsaken By all the Iiiiiiis, I sleep My last sleep In the palace I have to vacate Next day. Only an I Whom I can trust Sleeps with me. As I wake up to a phone call, I shed myself Of the I Who slept with me. The other end of the phone Makes a demand For the I Who was shed. In search of the I who was shed, My eyes travel down From the upper floor Through the window That is never opened. Below, In the soft glare of the sun, Amulances graze. Inside it, My eyes discover The I That I Shed Earlier. Its voice on the phone In my ears. Its gun Pointing at my eye. I on the phone above. I on the phone below. A bullet From below Opens the window That is never opened And exiles A frozen I. --- Repose By Samudra Neelima / trans by Ra Sh Between the rails A body prostrate Waits for the next train, Even after its suicide, In its own blood Flesh Grief, To ensure again and again That it is dead. As it dies Under many many trains, Many many times, Anxiety grows within - Am I dead, Am I Dead? The minced Body pulp Tours the country Under the wheels.

Ro Hith

Poems in a train 1 In train By the side of window I seat And read The long and poetic Sentences of Civilisation. 2 The train stops at a station A river streams out Into an ocean 3 At the railway gate A girl returning from school Waves her hand to an unknown relative in train. 4 I was thinking of a blood stained darkness And a war happening in utter silence, With my eyes closed, dreaming partially. The train jerked! Shattered the pictures! 5 You who read bloody history And poetry of war Sitting in an AC cell of train Moving with a controlled pace to a destination, Tell me- Is history so comfortable Is history so particularly destined

Saturday English Poem- Hunger/ Ro Hith Hunger: is a burning hut in violent rain. is a deserted highway lit by streetlights. is the empty room with a living clock. Come close listen to my stomach: A great machine digging the ground A factory with revolving gigantic wheels A slum demolished by diabolic juggernauts All the pages of history rapidly flipped A cuckoo crying in the middle of sleep. Place hand on my tummy and feel: The wall of a fort being battered down The kicks of shapeless infant from inside A divine stream that connects all life forms The sacrifice of a fictious goat to the goddess of hunger.

Ro Hith /

1

‎Ro Hith / at toilet complex

In subway station
people going into the toilet complex
are so hazy,
enigmatic, distrubed, weird.
Agitated ponds, their faces are.
Many metropolitan sounds
murmur in their tired garments.
Each one is a river,
flowing into the toilet-ocean.
No sky may fall,
no burden of earth is on their shoulders,
no money-lenders may be chasing them,
and no cinema shooting happens there,
still they all rush.
Stop them and you get a slap for free.

But the same people
when they come from toilet
are like Buddhas.
Like they gave their old slippers to the poor boy on road
soft and kind.
Like they came from a wonderful art-of-life class
silent and nice.
Like they had found all the nirvana in a bathroom
peaceful and calm.

Ro Hith||Glance||

Is my life a dead almond leaf
blowing in the winds of your breath?

Is this song of mine, a raindrop
falling in the pond of your love?

Am I the little bird
on which the first light of your glance touched,
for which I surrendered my senses
to wake in a new life?

Those melodies of strange silence
in empty streets of November,
The ripples of the still sea
on my emotionless face,
The untimely monsoon and violent winds
the singing cuckoo and raising sun,
falling meteors and storming sky,
is it all because of the debt
I owe for your glance ages ago?

I roamed
In villages of love
on those narrow lanes...passing between mud houses,
In deserts of humanity
for an oasis to quench the thirst of hope,
In jungles of time
running with flow of river and streams of light
I roamed
to explore and excavate the relics of a lost glance

Ro Hith || చెంచాడంత ఆవలింతలు ||

Original- Ra Sh/ Translation- Ro Hith

Translation~ Ro Hith / / When you come //

Afsar/

Translation~ Ro Hith/ When you come

Bring some silence
wherever you come from
and forget not
that perpetual thoughtlessness.

1

...from that desert
where everything had sunk
pulverizing air and light
between those congested walls
of a worrying room

2

...from the procession
of fluttering melody
over the body of tumbled petal,

from the fire-buds of longing in eye

3

...from eyes that never let
dreams to sleep

...from streams that ponder shadows

4

Wherever you come from
whenever...

forget not to bring
a tamarind leaf sized silence
and some quietness.

Strange things happened : million thanks to Kavisangamam friends - Ro Hith

Ro Hith

Strange things happened yesterday.
I am asked to read my poetry which was completely "accidental". I didn't prepare for that. I didn't even have a copy of my poetry...luckily Sky Baaba uncle had it. I must say...I breathed all the air out of my lungs once I finished reading my poetry.

I always wanted to show my poetry to K.Shiva Reddy(http://www.poetryinternationalweb.net/pi/site/poet/item/1607
4
). I used to go to many poetry meets and book exhibitions knowing that he will be going to come to those meets and exhibitions with my papers of poetry but I always hided these papers and a million words that I would like to talk with him behind my smile. And it was on yesterday that he came to me and asked me to give my poetry and phone number so that he can read them and call me.
I ate a single vada yesterday...but I didn't feel hungry. In the afternoon the conversation with Nauduri Murty uncle filled my tummy. My snack of yesterday was the talk with Vijayakumar Koduri uncle with tea. And my dinner was the chat with Mercy Margaret and other friends.
Kavi Yakoob uncle is so dear to me. I always loved him. Kranthi uncle, I didn't recognize him first and now I cannot forget him.
I tried to meet Afsar sir many times. And we met yesterday...after some months of longing. And that small chirpy talk with Arun Sagar is unforgettable.
The conversation with Subodh sir and his applause at the end made my day.

A million thanks to Kavisangamam friends who gave me wings on Independence day to fly to those distant lands of poetry.

Ro Hith || Sparrows ||

In the summers of May
a troop of grey sparrows
used to flow into our lane
as an escaped cloud of monsoon
roosted on the neem tree
and pollinated the music they
brought from different worlds.
When someone shooed them
they all rose into sky
as a single tide with million chirps
and flew to neighbour's compound wall
and then to the current pole
sopping the world with music.

Elders chopped the neem tree
as the sparrows were causing
ripples in their still lives.
Sparrows didn't return the next summer
the silence of May remained dry
and some unconventional rains
withered the street.

Ro Hith || Letter ||

Ma frequently says
when i was 6 years old
i used to draw on walls
on countless number of papers
bills and brother's notebooks.
I used to draw green hills
Where even an ant waits for my order to bite
And a half sun with red crayon
that always questions me- to rise or to set?
A river breathed by hills
a thatched hut on the bank
and an unopened letter on its doorstep.

Even now
The image of hills, half sun
and hut under the palm tree
screen behind my eyelids
And when ever a new letter falls
on the doorstep
A poem forms itself in me.
